Description
Pseudomugil Gertrudae Aru 2 Eggs
Pseudomugil gertrudae ARU II, commonly known as the Spotted Blue-eye Rainbowfish, is a small, freshwater fish within the Pseudomugilidae family, native to Australia and parts of New Guinea, including the Aru Islands (hence “ARU II”). Known for its striking coloration and unique fin structures, this fish is popular among aquarium enthusiasts for its beauty and distinctiveness.
Key Characteristics
- Size: Typically grows up to about 2.5 to 3 cm in length, making it a small, peaceful species suitable for smaller aquariums.
- Coloration: Displays a delicate translucent body with spots and a hint of blue around the eyes, hence the name “Blue-eye.” Males are generally more colorful, with yellow or orange highlights and fins adorned with dark spots.
- Fins: Males have elongated, almost fan-like fins, which they display as part of courtship and territorial displays.
- Temperament: Generally peaceful and prefers to be kept in small groups. Males may occasionally spar in displays, but these interactions are typically harmless.
- Habitat: Prefers shallow, slow-moving waters with dense vegetation in the wild. In an aquarium setting, providing plant cover and gentle water movement will make them feel at home.
Care Requirements
- Tank Setup: Due to its small size, a 10-20 gallon tank is suitable for a small group. The tank should have plants and open swimming space with a soft substrate.
- Water Parameters:
- pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (5.5-7.0)
- Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F)
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
- Diet: Omnivorous, with a diet that includes high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, and live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.
Breeding
The ARU II variety is relatively easy to breed in captivity, especially in a species-specific tank. Males will display their colorful fins and compete for the attention of females. The females lay small eggs among plants, and fry are usually free-swimming within a week.
This variety’s beauty and calm temperament make it a wonderful addition to well-maintained, peaceful aquariums, especially those focusing on replicating natural biotopes.
